Selbassenget i Polaria i Tromsø

Tromsø is young and vibrant with a long, cold history.

Famed for its nightlife, it's been dubbed "The Paris of the North" famed for its nightlife, while the name "The Gateway to the Arctic Ocean" conjures up images of completely different adventures. From here, the heroic polar explorers started their expeditions out into the unknown, going further north that anyone had ever been before. People and ships set off on Arctic fishing expeditions—and came back with holds filled with sealskins. And sometimes even polar bears. Maybe that's how the myth of polar bears in the streets came about?

Be it a museum, activity centre or ice hotel, the Arctic Ocean, polar life, hunting and proximity to the Arctic give the city its distinct identity . And you can have adventurous experiences in nature while also being close to the vibrant city life.  You can enjoy beer safaris and whale safaris as well as disco lights and Northern Lights. This city's backyard is the wilderness.
