Trondheim is a lively student city with an intimate city centre, colourful wooden houses and small, independent shops in several charming districts. In addition, there is an emphasis on locally sourced food and locally brewed beer, which means that a visit here can be really tasty.
Nidaros Cathedral was erected in honor of Saint Olav, the Viking king who Christianized Norway. The 101-meter-long church is the world’s northernmost Gothic cathedral. Construction of the cathedral began as early as 1070 and was completed around the year 1300. This is a pilgrimage destination for pilgrims from all over Europe. Norway’s kings are crowned here, and therefore it is in Trondheim that you can see Norway’s crown jewels, even though the king and his court are based in today’s capital, Oslo.
