Experience Trondheim from a completely new perspective – quiet, majestic, and close to both nature and city life, seen from the gentle glide of a kayak on the Nidelva River. The Nidelva River winds through the entire city and has been a lifeline for Trondheim for centuries – from historical trade and transport to today’s peaceful recreational area.
The tour is suitable for everyone, regardless of experience, and is just as beautiful and atmospheric in both summer and winter. It starts early in the morning – a calm and atmospheric beginning to the day, where you experience the city in soft morning light and a unique sense of tranquility before it comes to life. The tour begins at Tempe Sports Facility after a short drive from the quay, where you are welcomed by experienced instructors who ensure a safe and comfortable introduction. After a briefing on paddling techniques, safety, and equipment, you set out on a calm journey down the river. Along the way, you glide through beautiful natural surroundings, rich birdlife, and continue toward the city’s historic centre.
Along the route, you paddle past historic, colorful warehouses, continuing toward the majestic Nidaros Cathedral and beneath the old city bridges – landmarks that offer a unique perspective of Trondheim from the water. The city reveals itself from a new angle, with charming surroundings and fascinating views of architecture and landscape.
The tour continues through the colorful canals before arriving at Brattøra quay, where you take a short 15-minute walk back to the ship. Once back on board, you can enjoy a delicious breakfast.
From 1 November to 1 May, everyone wears a dry suit, for both comfort and safety. All participants must be able to swim at least 50 metres, and the maximum weight is 110 kg. The route may be shortened, depending on how fast the group paddles. In the winter season, the trip starts from Brattørkaia. If the river freezes over, or it gets very dark in December and January, we paddle along the canal only. In winter, you should wear at least two layers of underwear under the dry suit, as well as a hat and gloves. In summer, we recommend waterproof trousers and a windproof jacket.
