There is a rich art, culture and festival scene in Bodø, which also features on the town's facades, where street artists have been allowed to use entire house walls as their canvas. There is a lot to see here, both in and around the town.
From Bodø you come to Saltstraumen, the world's strongest tidal current. The moon pulls and pushes large bodies of water through a narrow sound every six hours. The speed of the seawater can reach twenty knots, and the whirlpools can be up to ten metres in diameter. Great to see from land, but what about a trip through it in a RIB?
Another natural experience is a visit to some of the many caves in the mountains around Bodø. Some are demanding and suited to climbers only. Others are more accessible–and big, such as the Svarthamargrotta, the largest natural mountain hall in the Nordic countries. It is a cathedral in the mountains, and one of the few in Europe that has its own internal glacier. Put on your headlamp, and step inside!
